As a veteran with back issues, who is not a surgical candidate, I have seen this exact problem. For years, I was given Oxycodone and Hydrocodone (still am, with ease), but until I was inpatient for PTSD issues, I was not given something more effective that is not habit forming. Now, I cannot get a refill for that medication, but can get several refills for narcotics.
My V.A. doctor resigned (and no one let me know) and they will not give me an appointment until they find another doctor - and they have no idea when that will be. So, in the meantime, I can get narcotics, but not less addictive pain meds which work better, and as one with suicidal ideation, can easily overdose on. Good plan!
